Gem Hospital & Research Centre, under the stewardship of Prof. C. Palanivelu is the third centre to introduce Laparoscopic surgery in India and the first to start Advanced Laparoscopic procedures. With the development of Bariatric surgery as an emerging speciality, this centre is one of the earliest in India to establish an exclusive department for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.

While LAPAROSURG (well known to all Laparoscopic Surgeons in India), caters to all specialities in laparoscopic surgery, LAPAROFIT was first initiated in 2007 as a single theme concept on Bariatric Surgery. Although LAPAROFIT ’07 & ’09 focussed only on Bariatric procedures, this year has gone a step beyond to include Metabolic Surgery for treatment of Diabetes even in lower BMI individuals.

Highlights of the conference includes Live Surgeries of all Bariatric procedures starting from Lap. Banding, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Lap. Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass to all recent Metabolic procedures like Lap. Duodeno-jejunal bypass, Lap.Ileal transposition surgeries etc; the latter procedures are to be demonstrated live for the first time in the Indian sub-continent and also for the first time in Indian Medical History the entire workshop is to be telecast live from Coimbatore to the venue in Chennai.

The topics for the symposia have been carefully chosen leaving behind topics of pure theoretical interest focussing only on issues of practical importance and also those, if one needs to practise Bariatric surgery effectively and safely.
